The Importance of Guru Purnima: A Day to Earn Grace (Sadhguru)

On Guru Purnima, there is a certain alliance between the Moon and the planets, which creates a receptivity in people to that dimension which we refer to as the guru.

Traditionally, people made use of this time of receptivity in whatever best way they could. Usually in India, they would stay out in the moonlight, with the guru if it was possible. The whole night was spent either meditating or singing, dancing and going wild.

So question is What should I do?

What should I do?” is always the question. If you do not do anything of your own, so that you are less of yourself, that is the best way to be receptive. Sadhana is always structured like this, so that it absorbs you into activity in such a way that in the daily process of living, you forget who you are, what you are and what your life is about. You are just absorbed into what is happening. That is the best way to receive Grace. 

There is a beautiful expression in the Zen system of allowing human consciousness to grow. A disciple went to a Zen master and asked, “What should I do for my spiritual growth?” “Sweep the floor, chop the wood, cook the food, that is all.” 

 

“For that, why should I come here? I can do it at home.” But there, sweeping is about your own floor. You will not sweep the next house’s floor if it is dirty. You will chop wood for your own use, you will cook food just for yourself and whom you consider as yours. You are using every activity to enhance who you are, not to dissolve who you are. This is all the difference between making our karma either into a bondage or into a process of liberation. Either you are acquiring karma or your karma is becoming yoga.

So, just sweeping the floor, cooking the food, planting a mango tree – your enemy and his children may eat the mangoes, it is all right. We do not care who eats, just plant. Now, the activity is a process of dissolution. Otherwise, every activity is a way of imprisoning yourself. It is activity which is entangling people unfortunately. Human ability to do things is being used to imprison themselves. Human intelligence is being used to cause misery to oneself. 

Once you start doing this, unknowingly, you will become an enemy of capability. That is a bad position to take. If you are against all capability and intelligence, you are asking for regression, not progress. You are not asking to evolve, you are asking to regress into a lesser kind of life.  

On that full moon night of Guru Purnima, 15000 years ago, as Adiyogi turned his attention to the seven sages, for the very first time in the history of humanity, human beings were reminded that they are not a fixed life. If they are willing to strive, every door in the existence is open. A human being need not be confined by the simple laws of nature. 

For people who are on the spiritual path, Guru Purnima is the biggest day in the year because they want to receive the grace of the Adi Guru and every other guru on the way.

गुरु पूर्णिमा का महत्व: कृपा अर्जित करने का दिन

 गुरु पूर्णिमा पर, चंद्रमा और ग्रहों के बीच एक निश्चित गठबंधन होता है, जो लोगों में उस आयाम के प्रति ग्रहणशीलता पैदा करता है जिसे हम गुरु कहते हैं।

 परंपरागत रूप से, लोगों ने ग्रहणशीलता के इस समय का उपयोग अपने सर्वोत्तम तरीके से किया।  आमतौर पर भारत में, वे चांदनी में बाहर रहते, यदि संभव हो तो गुरु के साथ।  पूरी रात या तो ध्यान करने या गाने, नाचने और जंगली घूमने में बीती।

 मुझे क्या करना चाहिए?"  हमेशा सवाल है।  अगर आप अपना खुद का कुछ नहीं करते हैं, जिससे कि आप खुद से कम हैं, तो ग्रहणशील होने का यह सबसे अच्छा तरीका है।  साधना को हमेशा इस तरह संरचित किया जाता है, ताकि यह आपको गतिविधि में इस तरह से अवशोषित कर ले कि जीवन की दैनिक प्रक्रिया में, आप भूल जाते हैं कि आप कौन हैं, आप क्या हैं और आपका जीवन किस बारे में है।  आप बस जो हो रहा है उसमें लीन हैं।  अनुग्रह प्राप्त करने का यह सबसे अच्छा तरीका है।

 मानव चेतना को विकसित होने देने की झेन प्रणाली में एक सुंदर अभिव्यक्ति है।  एक शिष्य एक झेन गुरु के पास गया और पूछा, "मुझे अपने आध्यात्मिक विकास के लिए क्या करना चाहिए?"  "फर्श पर झाड़ू लगाओ, लकड़ी काट दो, खाना पकाओ, बस।"

 "उसके लिए, मैं यहाँ क्यों आऊँ?  मैं इसे घर पर कर सकता हूं।"  लेकिन वहां, स्वीपिंग आपकी अपनी मंजिल के बारे में है।  यदि आप अगले घर की मंजिल गंदी हैं तो आप झाड़ू नहीं लगाएंगे।  आप अपने इस्तेमाल के लिए लकड़ी काटेंगे, आप सिर्फ अपने लिए खाना बनाएंगे और जिसे आप अपना समझेंगे।  आप जो हैं उसे बढ़ाने के लिए आप हर गतिविधि का उपयोग कर रहे हैं, न कि आप जो हैं उसे भंग करने के लिए।  हमारे कर्म को या तो बंधन में या मुक्ति की प्रक्रिया में बनाने के बीच यह सब अंतर है।  या तो आप कर्म प्राप्त कर रहे हैं या आपका कर्म योग बन रहा है।

 तो, बस फर्श पर झाडू लगाना, खाना पकाना, आम का पेड़ लगाना - आपका दुश्मन और उसके बच्चे आम खा सकते हैं, यह ठीक है।  हमें परवाह नहीं है कि कौन खाता है, बस पौधे लगाएं।  अब, गतिविधि विघटन की एक प्रक्रिया है।  अन्यथा, प्रत्येक गतिविधि स्वयं को कैद करने का एक तरीका है।  यह ऐसी गतिविधि है जो दुर्भाग्य से लोगों को उलझा रही है।  इंसान की चीजों को करने की क्षमता का इस्तेमाल खुद को कैद करने के लिए किया जा रहा है।  मनुष्य की बुद्धि का प्रयोग स्वयं को कष्ट पहुँचाने के लिए किया जा रहा है।

 एक बार जब आप ऐसा करना शुरू कर देंगे तो अनजाने में आप क्षमता के दुश्मन बन जाएंगे।  यह लेने के लिए एक बुरी स्थिति है।  यदि आप सभी क्षमता और बुद्धि के खिलाफ हैं, तो आप प्रगति नहीं, प्रतिगमन मांग रहे हैं।  आप विकसित होने के लिए नहीं कह रहे हैं, आप कम तरह के जीवन में वापस जाने के लिए कह रहे हैं।

 १५००० साल पहले गुरु पूर्णिमा की उस पूर्णिमा की रात, जब आदियोगी ने सात ऋषियों की ओर ध्यान दिया, मानवता के इतिहास में पहली बार, मनुष्यों को याद दिलाया गया कि वे एक निश्चित जीवन नहीं हैं।  यदि वे प्रयास करने को तैयार हैं, तो अस्तित्व का हर द्वार खुला है।  मनुष्य को प्रकृति के सरल नियमों से सीमित होने की आवश्यकता नहीं है।

 जो लोग आध्यात्मिक पथ पर हैं, उनके लिए गुरु पूर्णिमा वर्ष का सबसे बड़ा दिन होता है क्योंकि वे रास्ते में आदि गुरु और हर दूसरे गुरु की कृपा प्राप्त करना चाहते हैं।
